I grew up on the west coast of Ireland, in Sligo, a magical and mystical place, with a rich history and striking landscape.

My strongest memories from childhood are running on the sand dunes in Strandhill or Rosses point, or bringing my dogs everyday after school to Union Woods to get lost among the trees, hoping for an encounter with something wild, a deer, a hare…. The freedom and safety I felt in these places will always live in my heart, a concrete knowing that we are/ I am deeply connected to the natural world, and can never be truly alone, can never not belong. I found sanctuary in places where my feet could touch the earth. Home for me became a place outside of time, role, street name etc…. home became the state of being in which I experienced myself as interconnected with all of life. A place where my heart beat differently and words were no longer enough.

I received the Derek Hill student of the year award in Visual Education in 1999 and then studied Fine Art at Crawford College of Art and Design, Cork. Soon after I went on to travel, study yoga and meditation, raise a family, and now I’m living in West Cork for over 20 yrs.

I’ve been a meditation practitioner for many years, and the paradox of the stillness and silence that we sometimes encounter when we immerse ourselves in nature, and the sheer aliveness that is then perceivable when we slow down, is at the heart of my paintings.

It is my wish that my paintings evoke a visceral experience, of landscape, both inner and outer, - the weather, the light, the damp earth, the translucent clouds, or a fleeting emotion, a hint of an inner turmoil or a moment of grace…

‘Silence is So Accurate’ - Mark Rothko

This subject matter, the clarity and intelligence of silence, has long captivated me. For many years now I’ve been searching for ways of being that foster understanding, aliveness, integrity, compassion, beauty, wholeness. I’m searching for true connection, to the truth of who ‘I Am’, and to all that I share this life with. And so I’ve encountered the path and the gifts of silence. I’m slowly learning, to understand the meaning of self-acceptance, of forgiveness, of inner peace, and slowly I’m exploring how these can be expressed through my painting and drawing. This is a process of quieting the mind so as to encounter what’s moving within me, what is immediate in what wishes to be expressed, and it’s an integral part of my practice.

Light is revealed…the light within all beings, the light that allows perception, the light of understanding and insight. I explore painting this light, the translucent and everchanging light on the land, the sea, the clouds, the sky, the light that emanates from places and beings. I explore painting the light in the human face, the light of consciousness that is found in the eyes, the expression, the posture.

And I always search for a silence within me, to find more truth in what I perceive and more truth in the act of allowing an artwork to arrive through me.

This is my path, to become more fully alive, more fully present to the complexities of being human, an embodied consciousness, here on the earth.

Everything interconnected.

I paint to wake up to who I Am.’
